The Weekend to End Breast Cancer - 2006

This was a personal & social commitment to
women and families in our community

Your help was appreciated when you

donated on behalf of the team members of Helen's Smile

We did it!

Thank you to everyone

who supported Holly and I.

And thank you to Helen!

Here is our story.

The Walkers

Our prayer: That families will no longer have to experience the fear, pain and suffering of cancer. Our children will learn about breast cancer from history books.

Helen's smile is our inspiration for wanting to help raise money to end breast cancer. In our everyday lives, we occasionally have the opportunity of having a friend that is a truly inspirational individual. It is not our place to tell Helen’s story, but when we think of the suffering caused by cancer, we think of our friend Helen and her family. When we think of the value of a positive attitude, we think of Helen. When we see bright, happy colours, we feel Helen's courage. When we think of buckling down and working through whatever life has to offer, we think of Helen and how much she learned.

When we hear a funny story about strife and suffering, we think of the stories that Helen told. When we wonder if we would have courage when it is needed, we think of how Helen kept going through the sorrow, worry, and fear. When we hear of the amazing strength of a family member under pressure, we know who they are because of Helen. When we see a smile through tear drops, we think of Helen.

Proceeds benefit Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, funding important breast cancer research, education, services and care. Money we raise as a tribute to Helen's Smile will bring smiles to many women and their families.

Now that Holly and I are nearing the end of our journey, we want to share our success with people who helped us along the way. I especially want to thank Holly for her encouragement and her fortitude when we walked in hot weather and cold. (Would you believe minus 25!)

We heard stories of women who fought breast cancer in the early 60's when their husbands could not fully understand what they were going through. We were helped with fundraising by a young mother growing her hair and donating five years worth (on more than one occasion) to give an extra boost to women who needed encouragement on their personal journey of survival. We talked with men and women who had wives, mothers and sisters who fought this terrible disease and they supported our journey. Many small business owners made donations in money and prizes, their actions showed how much they care about our community. Individuals helped by taking time out of their busy day to help create fun events to raise money. And many more took their hard earned money to contribute to this worthy cause. Each and every donation regardless of size was appreciated.

The journey is not quite over for any of us. We would like to thank all the people mentioned on the Honour Role. Their names are listed below. And do have a look at some of the events that got us this far - there are some mighty fine people mentioned at the bottom of this page.

Holly and I would like to thank Helen for showing up to every event, making multiple quiet donations, walking with us, and rallying her family and friends to help us. We would also like to thank YOU for your support on behalf of the Weekend to End Breast Cancer and on behalf of all of the Helen's in this world.

Today is the day after the walk. We did it! Holly and I raised almost $4700 and we both walked the 60 kilometers. The highlight of the weekend was that Helen was at the finish line to great us. Thank you Helen.
